Indian para archer Sheetal Devi has created history at the Asian Para Games 2026 by breaking a seven-year-old world record in the women’s compound elimination round. She scored an incredible 149 points during her pre-quarterfinal match against Chan Yuen. Her score was one point higher than the previous world record of 148, set by Jessica Stretton. The achievement adds another remarkable chapter to Sheetal’s inspiring sporting journey.
Another Record in the Qualification Round
Sheetal had already made headlines a day earlier by matching the world record in the women’s compound ranking round. She scored 704 out of a possible 720 points, equalling the existing world record and setting a new Asian record. Her consistent performances have made her one of India’s standout athletes at the tournament, raising hopes of more medals for the country.
An Exceptional Individual Score
Sheetal’s 704-point score also matched the mark achieved by Türkiye’s Öznur Cüre Girdi at the Paris 2024 Paralympics. During the ranking round, Sheetal hit the 10-point zone 57 times, with 32 arrows landing in the central X ring. Her performance also surpassed her own Asian Para Games record of 680 points, set at the Hangzhou edition.
A Remarkable Journey in Archery
The 19-year-old archer from Jammu and Kashmir was born without arms. She shoots using her feet, shoulder and jaw, demonstrating extraordinary control, precision and determination. Her achievements have made her an inspiration for athletes and sports fans alike. Despite the physical challenges she faces, Sheetal continues to compete at the highest level and rewrite records.
Success in Team Events Too
Sheetal has also delivered impressive results in team competitions. At the Paris 2024 Paralympics, she won a bronze medal in the compound mixed team event. At the Hangzhou Asian Para Games, she collected two gold medals and one silver. Her latest performance further strengthens India’s campaign at the 2026 competition.
Mixed Team World Record Broken
Sheetal and Toman Kumar also set a new world record in the mixed team ranking round with a combined score of 1,402 points. Toman scored 698 points in the men’s compound ranking round, adding to Sheetal’s outstanding contribution. Their total surpassed the previous record of 1,400 points, set by Sheetal and Rakesh Kumar in Ahmedabad earlier this year. With multiple records already to her name, Sheetal’s performance has become one of the major highlights of the Asian Para Games 2026.
