The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) organised an “Ungli Toh Uthegi – Hallabol March” in New Delhi on Sunday, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. The demonstration is part of a series of protests by student groups and other organisations over the functioning of the Election Commission of India.
The march began at the NSUI national headquarters and moved towards Jantar Mantar, according to the organisation. During the protest, several demonstrators were seen climbing onto police barricades as they attempted to proceed towards the designated protest site.
Vinod Jakhar Leads Demonstration
The march was led by NSUI national president Vinod Jakhar, who carried a placard reading, “Gyanesh, it’s done bro.” Some protesters wrapped one of their fingers in bandages marked with election ink, using the gesture to highlight their concerns about voting rights and the electoral process.
Jakhar alleged that around 13 crore people had been deprived of their right to vote and accused the Election Commission of compromising its independence. These claims were made by the NSUI leader during the demonstration.
NSUI Questions Jantar Mantar Restrictions
Addressing the protesters, Jakhar reiterated the demand for Kumar’s resignation and raised concerns about reports regarding changes to Jantar Mantar’s status as a designated protest venue. He argued that the location should remain accessible to groups seeking to demonstrate peacefully.
The NSUI president said the organisation would continue its agitation and insisted that protesters should be allowed to exercise their democratic right to peaceful assembly. He also declared his intention to move past the barricades towards Jantar Mantar.
Protests Continue Over Election Commission
The march comes amid ongoing demonstrations by student organisations, political groups and activists raising concerns about electoral roll revisions and the Election Commission’s functioning. The NSUI has said it will continue pressing its demands, while the allegations raised by protesters remain their stated position.
