Indian Stock Market Fall : The Indian stock market declined for the third consecutive trading session on Thursday, October 22, 2026. The Sensex and Nifty remained under pressure throughout the session, leading to a significant reduction in investors’ wealth by the market’s close. Concerns over international developments triggered selling across large-cap companies and smaller stocks. Although the market recovered slightly towards the end of the session, the gains were insufficient to offset the losses. The total market capitalisation of companies listed on the BSE fell by approximately ₹4.02 lakh crore in a single day, leaving investors cautious.
West Asia Tensions Raise Concerns
Reports of a drone attack on Saudi Aramco were cited among the key factors behind the market decline. Fears of escalating tensions in West Asia affected investor sentiment. During the session, the Sensex plunged 704.58 points to an intraday low of 73,005.11. The Nifty 50 also fell 256.50 points to 22,554.85. Both benchmark indices recovered some ground later in the day. At the close, the Sensex was down 460.30 points, or 0.62 per cent, at 73,249.39, while the Nifty declined 123.70 points, or 0.54 per cent, to 22,687.65.
Investors’ Wealth Suffers a Major Decline
The impact of the sell-off was not limited to the benchmark indices, as broader markets also remained under pressure. According to the available figures, the total market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies stood at ₹4,62,37,678.67 crore on October 21. By the close of trading on October 22, it had fallen to ₹4,58,35,517.82 crore. This represented a decline of approximately ₹4,02,160.85 crore in a single trading session. Mid-cap and small-cap stocks also weakened. The Nifty Midcap 100 fell by around one per cent, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 declined by more than one per cent.
IT and FMCG Stocks Face Selling Pressure
Selling pressure was widespread across sectors. The Nifty FMCG index fell by approximately 1.5 per cent, while the Nifty IT index declined by more than one per cent. The Nifty Auto index also lost over half a per cent. Selling in these sectors added to the overall market pressure. However, public sector bank and pharmaceutical stocks showed relative strength amid the downturn. Both sectoral indices managed to end in positive territory with modest gains, indicating that buying activity continued in some parts of the market despite the broader decline.
These Stocks Gain Despite the Market Slump
Of the 30 Sensex constituents, 19 closed lower, while 11 recorded gains. Bajaj Finance was the top performer, rising 1.61 per cent to close at ₹939.95. UltraTech Cement gained 1.52 per cent, while ICICI Bank advanced 0.71 per cent. Sun Pharma, SBI, Bharti Airtel and Adani Ports also ended higher. Tata Steel, Kotak Bank, HCL Tech and Bajaj Finserv posted modest gains as well. Despite the strength in selected stocks, the overall market sentiment remained weak. Global developments and investor sentiment are likely to influence market direction in the coming trading sessions.
