With the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections approaching, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav appears to be changing the language of his politics. Earlier, his political messaging largely focused on social justice and the rights of backward classes, Dalits and minorities. Now, he is increasingly linking socialism with Sanatan traditions and the idea of Ram Rajya. On Dussehra, Akhilesh said socialism itself represents Ram Rajya and described those who follow truth, justice and respect for others as true followers of Sanatan. He has also said that Sanatan and socialism share the same values. His statements are being viewed as an attempt to expand the party’s appeal among Hindu voters before the next Assembly elections.
The Challenge of an Old Political Image
The Samajwadi Party has long faced criticism from the BJP over its perceived preference for Muslim voters and its position on Hindu-related issues. This political image is partly linked to the 1990 police firing on kar sevaks in Ayodhya during Mulayam Singh Yadav’s tenure. The incident became a major point of attack for the BJP and continued to influence political debates around the Samajwadi Party. By invoking Ram Rajya, Sanatan and religious faith, Akhilesh is trying to convey that Hindu traditions and social justice do not have to be opposing ideas. The strategy could help the party reach voters who value religious traditions while also supporting equality and social welfare.
What Election Results Tell Us
The party’s past electoral performance also helps explain this shift. The Samajwadi Party won just 47 seats in the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Its alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections did not deliver the expected success. In 2022, the party won 111 Assembly seats with allies such as the Rashtriya Lok Dal and Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party but remained short of power. The 2024 Lok Sabha elections brought a major improvement, with the SP emerging as Uttar Pradesh’s largest party. The results strengthened Akhilesh’s confidence in the PDA strategy, which focuses on backward classes, Dalits and minorities. However, expanding this support may be essential if the party hopes to form the government in 2027.
Religion Becomes a Political Battleground
Akhilesh’s statements on religious issues have also drawn attention to his engagement with Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati. The SP chief has used religious debates and questions raised about the BJP government to challenge the ruling party. He has argued that religion should not be limited to slogans and that truth, justice and respect for others are central to Sanatan values. The BJP, however, has strongly criticised his position. Uttar Pradesh minister Bhupendra Chaudhary accused the SP of restricting Hindu festivals during its time in power and pursuing appeasement politics. The BJP argues that Akhilesh’s recent statements cannot erase the party’s earlier political image. These competing claims have turned religion and social values into important parts of the emerging election debate.
The PDA Strategy Faces a New Test
Akhilesh now faces the challenge of retaining the support that helped the SP perform well in 2024 while reaching more Hindu voters. The party will need to maintain its backing among minorities and sections of Dalit society while building confidence among new groups. Religious messaging may help open the door, but issues such as jobs, inflation, farmers’ concerns, education, law and order, and social respect are also likely to shape voter decisions. The BJP, meanwhile, is expected to defend its Hindutva politics and question the SP’s changing position. Whether the PDA coalition remains united will also be an important factor in the contest.
Will the Strategy Deliver in 2027?
Linking socialism with Ram Rajya and Sanatan could help Akhilesh Yadav reshape the Samajwadi Party’s political image and widen its electoral reach. However, the impact of this approach will depend on more than speeches and religious references. Voters will also assess the parties’ work, candidates and responses to local problems. The BJP and SP are likely to continue competing over the meaning of religion, social justice and public welfare. As Uttar Pradesh moves towards the 2027 Assembly elections, Akhilesh’s new messaging marks an effort to change the political debate. Whether it translates into votes and brings the party closer to power remains the key question.
